Today, it's evident that Portugal's history as a world conqueror is in the past, and that it's recent economic woes have left parts of the nation rather disconnected from the major cities. However, this takes nothing away from the beauty and culture that still thrives in all corners of the nation.
Through the economic struggles of the 2010s and the recent rampant wildfires springs forth the opportunity for evolution and renewal. For example, while Port remains a key export of the nation, Portuguese enólogos have acknowledged that the global market for other wines is larger and have returned to producing more un-fortified wines. Expect to see more Vinho Verdes and Portuguese reds in the years to come. They are delicious.
Portugal is a wonderful place. The natural and man-made beauty is unique and unparalleled. The food, the pastries (oh my gosh, pasteis) and the wine are worth the trip along.
